Four species of softshell turtles are native to Malaysia.
The Southeast Asian Softshell Turtle (Amyda cartilaginea) is a large, aquatic turtle with a flat, round leathery carapace with a long neck that is thick and flexible. The forefeet bear extremely sharp claws used for digging in muddy or sandy sediments.
This species can be found in tropical regions, freshwater habitats, rainforest terrestrial biomes, in lakes, ponds, canals and lowland streams.
This turtle is an omnivore, feeding on plants and animals like crabs, fish, insects, worms, eggs, amphibians, berries, nuts and seeds and even at times bird carcasses.
It can stay underwater for long periods of time because of its cloaca, a gill-like structure that absorb oxygen in the water. How long can you stay underwater? Tell us in the comments!
