Did you know community exchanges play a huge role in connecting communities and allowing them to share their knowledge and learning with each other?
It is embedded in many ongoing aspects of our work. For one of our programmes, we recently organised a community exchange visit to Melangkap, Kota Belud together with the Kampung Melangkap community and Jawatankuasa Bio-Budaya Melangkap (JBBM)/Melangkap Bio-Cultural Committee.
Great conversations were had between JBBM and the visiting communities from Nabawan, Semporna and Kudat districts about challenges, experiences, and why community protocols are important for protecting natural resources, improving livelihoods, and preserving cultures. They also had the opportunity to explore Kampung Melangkap’s ecotourism, handicrafts, and tagal (community-based river management system) initiatives.
WWF-Malaysia hopes exchanges such as this will continue to support communities in strengthening sustainable resource management practices and increasing stewardship of nature.
A community protocol is a documentation of practices and procedures developed by indigenous peoples and other local communities about their traditional knowledge, territories, and natural resources
