We'll Continue With This Week's Turtle. Black Mars..

We’ll continue with this week’s #turtle !

Black Marsh Turtle (Siebenrockiella crassicollis) is a freshwater turtle endemic to Southeast Asia. They are also known as the smiling turtle, because of its upturned jaws that look as if it is always smiling. Doesn’t that make you smile too? 🙂

It has two distinctive white dots behind its eyes, giving the impression that it has four eyes! It is very dark brown or black in colour, and the head is mostly black too. Being nocturnal gives it the perfect cover, but sometimes they do emerge during the day to bask in the sunshine, or to look for food.

Black Marsh Turtle is notable for being the first freshwater turtle spesies shown to exhibit an XX/XY system of chromosomal sex determination, meaning their gender is not determined through the temperature of the sand during incubation like other turtles, but is determined through the XX/XY chromosome in their DNA! 🧬
