Today Is Puppy Mill Awareness Day And, Fittingly, ..

Today is Puppy Mill Awareness Day and, fittingly, Responsibly Dog Ownership Day too.

As a Soi Dog supporter, we know you share our “adopt, don’t shop” ethos. But how can we encourage others to feel the same? How can we respond when a friend or family member tell us they’re thinking of buying a dog from a puppy mill?

Here are some ideas:

🐶 Don’t judge or shame.

When you have a passion for rescue and someone close to you has a desire to buy, it can feel frustrating to say the least. But try to listen to their reasoning and offer your advice calmly. They are much more likely to take your advice if they feel inspired to do so and much less likely to if they feel judged or shamed.

🐶 If you’ve adopted in the past, share your experience.

Give your friend or family member useful information about what the process involved and how rewarding you found it to be. They might have misconceptions about shelters and shelter dogs which you can help to address too.

🐶 Explain the realities of puppy mills.

These are commercial facilities who put profit before welfare. Birth defects, diseases, injuries and poor socialisation are common as a result, as are cramped cages and filthy living conditions. While it may be tempting to want to take a dog out of such a situation, doing so will only prop up the business.

🐶 Recommend a breed-specific rescue.

If your friend or family member is set on a particular breed, help direct them to a shelter which specialises in that breed. Tell them what a hero they will be for saving not one life but two – the dog they take home and the dog that will take their place in the shelter.
