IT is very troubling to come across such posts on a daily basis. In late June, MDDB has sponsored the boarding of similar mummies and their puppies as we have no space at the sanctuary given our quarantine area is filled with mummy dogs and their babies. The dogs in these photos look well fed – so there are probably some people giving them food daily. If these mothers and puppies are not rescued asap – there are two sad scenarios awaiting them. Firstly, they would be caught by the local councils and in most cases even though the mothers could easily escape – the remain behind and get caught because they will not leave their babies behind. Once brought to the pound, the puppies will probably die even before they are euthanised. In some pounds mothers and puppies are kept separately but there are also pounds that don’t separate the adults from puppies as well as new-borns and their lactating mothers. The enclosures are jet sprayed to clean the poo and pee and there is a possibility that the puppies will also get wet together with the adult dogs. If they are not caught by the local councils, most of the puppies in the litter will still die – either in traffic accidents, attacks by other adult dogs or bitten or eaten by other creatures such as snakes and monitor lizards. Of course, they can be rescued and put up for adoption – but there are ‘adopters’ who will give them miserable lives, without even vaccinating or spaying them, and then dump them when the males become uncontrollable during mating season and the females fall pregnant. This is the sad reality. So, the best option would be to ensure these unwanted puppies are not born at all by spaying and neutering their parents. Anyone with a sense of pity and compassion could undertake this exercise. It does not have to be only the rescue groups that do it. The onus must be on the feeders to also spay/neuter as they feed. Since some of them are collecting public funds to feed – it would be apt to use half of the amount collected to feed and the other half to spay/neuter. Do not justify the refusal to spay neuter the dogs you feed by saying that at least their bellies are full because of you. IF YOU SPAY AND NEUTER WHILE FEEDING – MOTHERS AND PUPPIES WILL NOT DIE MISERABLE DEATHS. THAT IS MUCH BETTER THAN MERELY HAVING A FULL BELLY TEMPORARILY. PEACE OUT!

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
