We receive many messages and WhatsApp messages on a daily basis asking us to clear entire packs of dogs from neighbourhoods and factories and place them in our sanctuary. Rescue does not work that way. It is not right to clear the streets of dogs and stuff them in shelters – because it will result in the shelter being a big sham or failure. To run a shelter effectively, you need a sufficient number of workers with most of them staying in. This is because due to their nature as pack animals, dogs are known to get into fights. Hence, it is crucial to have people around at all times to break-up fights. Most places lock-up their dogs in kennels and cages – but isn’t it cruel to take free-spirited street dogs and lock them-up? Shelters that are not fully staffed or do not have anyone living on location do not tell you that they have dead dogs on a daily basis. The space in shelters are so confined that the dog that is being attacked has no chance of making an escape. Furthermore, the fight may start off between just two dogs but –will always end-up as a gang fight resulting in many casualties. If you have too many dogs and only a few workers, you are left with no choice other than doing tray feeding. When you do not do individual feeding and resort to tray feeding – only the fit and alpha dogs get to eat their fill. The weakest will end-up with very little or no food at all. There are many more things that come into play. So, please be informed that this is why it is not suitable to take every street dog that you see and stuff them into shelters.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
