TNRM volunteer, Lisa saw another out of hours’ emergency vet visit for a new unneutered ginger stray male cat in her condominium in Puchong looking in a very bad way with what looked to be a serious injury, possibly a dog bite or road accident or even sporotrichosis, across the whole right side of his body. The poor boy was being harassed by an existing resident stray cat and urgent action was obviously needed.

This stray cat whom we name him as Satsuma, was immediately brought to our panel vet. Upon examination, the vet informed he has apparently been suffering from severe bacterial dermatitis, a puncture wound and swelling to the neck, which was initially leaking pus. In a way, we were reliefed as it was less serious (surgery not required!) and not sporotrichosis. He was immediately hospitalised to commence treatments that night.

After a week of intensive treatments with daily wound cleaning, antibiotics and other medications at the vet, Satsuma’s condition started to improve. Another 1.5 weeks later, Satsuma was well enough to be neutered and vaccinated. The surgery went well and Satsuma was discharged a week later.

Satsuma’s case possibly highlights the growing number of former pets we are seeing being abandoned. Please help spread awareness about the irresponsibility of doing this in terms of animal welfare, not to mention the extra pressure it puts on overstretched volunteers and extremely limited resources.
