With travel resuming, you maybe visiting foreign lands soon. Even though the word rabies may not be a word you hear often in your own country, it is highly prevalent in many parts of the world. It is one of the 20 Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) by the World Health Organization.
Rabies is found on every continent, except Antarctica and some islands, it is well controlled or even eliminated in most developed countries. Today over 95% of human victims are from Africa and Asia, most from marginalized and impoverished rural communities.
Rabies Fact. Not Fear.
In case you or anyone you know is bitten by a dog or a mammal which maybe carrying rabies, here are the first and foremost steps you should take straightaway:
Immediately wash the bite wound for 15 minutes with soap and running water
Consult the nearest hospital or your general physician about vaccinations.
Rabies is a preventable disease that overwhelmingly afflicts the poor, both in terms of its death toll and the associated financial burden. Annual economic losses because of the disease are around 8.6 billion US dollars, mostly due to premature deaths, but also because of spending on human vaccines, lost income for victims of animal bites, and other costs.
Rabies is 99% fatal but 100% preventable. Let’s help end rabies together.
