Have you signed SPCA Selangor’s petition to ask QSR Brands (KFC_MaIaysia, Pizza Hut, Kedai Ayamas -Ayamas Roasters, and Taco Bell Malaysia) to switch to cage-free eggs yet? If not, please sign it here: https://www.change.org/p/chairman-qsr-brands-m-holdings-bhd-qsr-brands-kfc-pizza-hut-ayamas-end-the-use-of-battery-cages-now
Quick facts in response to your questions:
1. Yes, SPCA Selangor wants more people to go vegan. We also want more businesses to offer plant-based options. But incremental animal welfare improvements such as switching to cage-free eggs and better broiler (i.e. chicken raised for meat) welfare are still important. We need to improve the lives of farm animals that are already in the animal agriculture system.
2. Halal certification does not mean cage-free or cruelty-free. It means food and drinks are prepared according to halal procedures and standards. This means that eggs from battery cages can be certified halal in Malaysia.
3. We need to care about farm animals the same way we care about companion animals such as dogs and cats. We don’t have to choose either farm animals or companion animals. We can choose to care about both. Over 99% of animals killed by humans are killed for food. Those killed in pounds, shelters, laboratories, and the pet trade make up less than 1/%. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore, we can all agree that farm animals deserve a better life.
