In Setiu Wetlands, communities such as Sahabat Alam Sekitar Setiu (Sahabat Setiu) depend on wetlands for their livelihoods. Since 2015, they have been actively protecting and safeguarding the natural resources in Setiu Wetlands, and are known as the local voice of conservation at the state and national levels.

Sahabat Setiu works closely with the Setiu Wetlands State Park Management Committee on ecotourism activities in Setiu Wetlands State Park. They have successfully organised various nature-based activities such as mangrove tours and replanting, as well as river cruises. They also provide tour guide services for tourist and educational trips.

Among their achievements was being appointed as one of the local community group representatives for the National Mangroves Replanting Programme Committee under the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. They participated in the quarterly committee meetings chaired by the Director General of the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia. Moving forward, more awareness events by Sahabat Setiu will take place to attain their targets and mission in conservation.
