St John's Cat Swallows Fish Hook. Spca Recently Re..

ST JOHN’S CAT SWALLOWS FISH HOOK

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

SPCA recently returned to St John’s Island (SJI) with SJI caregivers to microchip cats. The operation was a success with 14 cats microchipped! We couldn’t have done it without the help of the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML). SPCA had previously sterilised over a hundred SJI cats, setting up a temporary surgery room on the island.

During the exercise, we learnt that a cat (Prince) was found with a fish hook stuck in his belly. Initially, Prince was spotted with a hook in his mouth, but attempts to remove it were unsuccessful as he went into hiding.

A kind volunteer, one of the SJI caregivers, found him two days later. He was weak and dehydrated, but with no hook in sight. Prince was then brought to a clinic, where x-rays revealed a fish hook in his stomach. He also underwent surgery for its extraction. Thankfully, the hook didn’t perforate the stomach wall although several attempts were needed to dislodge it. Overall, Prince sustained some tears in his stomach lining and a hole and ulceration in his gums. He is currently recovering under the care of his rescuer.

Unfortunately, Prince is not the first of such victims… but he’s one of the luckier ones. On 6 Sep, a post on Ottercity’s fb page revealed that an otter pup died from a fish hook injury. Residents had spotted the pup near Punggol Beach with a fishing line dangling from its mouth.

Countless animals have been injured or killed by fishing hooks and lines. ⚠️SPCA urges for the proper disposal of these items to prevent harm to animals and even humans.
