Pioneer Conservationist Who Dedicated Her Life to Protecting Earth—Jane Goodall
The 2020 Masters’ Forum for Sustainable Development is coming soon! Be sure to tune in to our website from 4p.m. to 6p.m. on Monday, September 21 to watch the livestream.
The 2020 Tang Prize in Sustainable Development went to Dr. Jane Goodall for her unrivalled contribution to ecosystem conservation. In 1977, she established the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) to promote not only the conservation of chimpanzees and other wildlife, but also the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) published by the UN in 2015.
Sustainable Development is an issue the UN and the world have been devoting much attention to. One of the representative programs launched by the JGI is TACARE, which stands for Lake Tanganyika Catchment Reforestation and Education. Since 1994, this community-centered conservation and development project, through close collaboration with inhabitants in the villages surrounding the Gombe National Park, has done a lot in terms of protecting the forests and halting biodiversity loss by alleviating poverty with strategies such as introducing sustainable farming methods, starting a micro-credit program, providing health facilities and offering girls scholarships.
There is a close affinity between the TACARE Program and SDGs. This program therefore can be hailed as one of the models of how sustainable development can be achieved alongside the efforts to protect our environment, encourage economic growth, and make sure social justice is duly served. It is also a successful example for conservationists working in other parts of Africa to emulate.
