The Melanau Traditional Food Pipus Is Best Consume..

The Melanau traditional food pipus is best consumed with hot rice or sagu, a perfect combo for your tea or coffee. Akin to otak-otak from Peninsular Malaysia, the differences between the two are in the preparation and ingredients. The fillings of pipus comprise prawn, squid and fish such as ikan parang (Chirocentrus dorab) and ikan bulu or locally known as ikan gonjeng.
.
The ingredients are diced, mixed with spices, and wrapped in nipah leaves, certainly very environmentally friendly! This is a simple dish eaten especially during the wet monsoon season when fresh catch of fish is limited.
.
For indigenous communities living along coastal or riverine areas such as the Melanau, protecting mangroves and rivers is important to ensure a continuous supply of seafood and raw materials such as firewood.
