HAPPY TALES: HAPPY, ADOPTED BY CLARA & HENRYK
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Clara & Henryk: “We initially planned on adopting another dog, Dexter, from SPCA. We visited him every weekend for three months and Happy was his shelter neighbour. Whenever we visited Dexter, Happy would rush to his gate for attention! One day, we found Happy’s cage empty and for some reason I cried thinking that I wouldn’t see him again. That’s when we knew we had fallen in love with him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We thought of adopting them both but were advised to only adopt one, so we decided to adopt Happy! Half his life was over and we really wanted him to know what it was like to have a family.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Happy had a hard time adjusting at home. While he loved us and we loved him, he had separation anxiety. Whenever we left his sight, he would have a panic attack and claw/bite his way through dry walls and doors to get to us. However, once he realised we weren’t going to abandon him, the house became his fortress.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
He always waits at the door when we come home. We have an elderly grandmother at home too, and she says it’s nice to have him as a companion. Our biggest lesson learnt is that rescued dogs often come with their quirks and challenges. Especially with senior dogs, it’s harder to change their habits, so you have to learn to adapt to your pet’s needs. It doesn’t make them any less deserving of love!
