June Marks Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, A 30-Day Awa..

June marks Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, a 30-day awareness campaign designed to help reduce the intake of cats and kittens that find their way into shelters in June. This month, we would like to highlight our overlooked black cats. The majority of our rescued cats who take longer to find homes are black, or black-and-white, cats. Sadly, this can be due to superstition, negative association or because they are considered not “unique looking”.
But soi cat Dirk is definitely a unique boy. He’s lucky, too, as he finally found his #furrytailending in Washington DC in early 2020 through our partner rescue Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.
Medically, Dirk was quite an adventure to diagnose. After he arrived at the Soi Dog shelter in 2018, the carers noticed he kept vomiting after eating. The vets suspected he had a condition called megasophagus which meant his esophagus was unable to push food from his mouth to his stomach.🙀
It sounded dire, but the solution was simple: let gravity help! As you can see from the video, Dirk had to eat standing up, but this didn’t put his adopters off one bit. His forever family collected him and sent us a sweet update:
“It seems like Dirk (we renamed Bagheera, from The Jungle Book) doesn’t have much of an appetite during the day but loves eating when we eat at night. He also wakes us up early in the morning just to jump up and hug us, which is adorable. He’s very energetic and loves to jump on everything, knocking small things over intentionally and then looking at us for attention. And yes, he is taking his medicine fine now.”
Black cats deserve to be loved just as much as any other creature. But sometimes the stigmas surrounding them hold them back from being rehomed. These fabulous felines aren’t aware of these stigmas; they live in the moment and are always ready to welcome you with open paws.
Please consider adopting a #blackcat this #adoptasheltercatmonth. Or if you are unable to, please spread the word about Adopt a Shelter Cat Month on social media and inspire others to open their hearts to some of our lovable mini-panthers at the Soi Dog shelter:
