HAPPY TALES X ROVER, ADOPTED BY DR GRACE AND MR KELVIN

“My husband and I adopted Rover, a Singapore Special, from the SPCA inAugust 2019. He was found on the streets in 2012 and spent six years in the shelter. He was once adopted and returned by his previous owners who left Singapore to return to their host country.

Despite having been a shelter dog for most of his life, Rover is amazing. The first picture of him holding his toy was taken on the very first day he came home. He had skin lesions when we first adopted him, which were the result of his previous owners not taking care of him properly. He is also still a bit nervous whenever it rains or thunderstorms. However, he has improved in both of these areas. He’s much calmer when it rains, especially if he listens to classical music.

The best part about Rover is his loyalty. He will follow us around the house, regardless of which room we are in. When we’re out late, he will sit on his big cushion in the hall and patiently wait for our return. He’s also very intelligent. When we adopted him, he already knew the ‘shake’ and ‘sit’ commands. He has now learned how to roll over and to wait patiently for his dinner and treats. In addition, he enjoys solving food puzzles.

For those who are hesitant about adopting a street dog, let me say that it has been such a wonderful and enriching experience for us and Rover. We have brought joy and happiness into each others’ lives. Rover’s antics are truly goofy and puppy-like, even though he’s almost eight years old. When he’s happy, he will chase his tail. He will also play with his stuffed toys and try to sleep with his paw on top of one.

Also, we’ve found that Rover is quite tough; he is low-maintenance when it comes to health problems.

So, do something kind. Adopt a local Singapore Special. They will love you no less than your pedigree Poodle, Lab or Retriever. You have my word on that.” – Dr Grace Chee and Mr Kelvin Lim
