As you read this post, Barni and Queen B await at the Malaysian checkpoint to complete the necessary documentation for their final release into the wild, thanks to the support of National Parks Board and Perhilitan.
Malaysian giant turtles like Barni, the largest freshwater turtle species in South-east Asia, are endangered on the IUCN list. Threats faced by Malaysian giant turtles and giant Asian pond turtles, like Queen B, include the meat trade, demand in traditional Chinese medicine and the illegal pet trade. Today’s repatriation is a symbol of hope for the hundred over reptiles who currently reside at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre because they too deserve a second chance at a life, free in the protected wild.
ACRES continues to care for several other endangered wild animal species who were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Please donate to our rehabilitation efforts: http://give.asia/acreswildliferescue
