Revered for its prowess and beauty, the tiger is seen as the ‘King of the Forests’ – even the stripes on its forehead form the Chinese character Wang (王), or King.
In northeast China, these “kings” – commonly known as Amur tigers – are receiving support from another royalty. Since 2011, the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco has been supporting WWF in driving Tx2 – the global goal to double the number of tigers in the wild.
In early September, the Prince Albert II of Monaco visited the tiger landscape in Huangnihe, where China’s wild tiger population has recently begun showing hopeful signs of recovery, thanks to strong efforts by the government and local communities.
A member of the local community, Wu ZhongShuang, shares his story of how he went from poacher to volunteer ranger, giving up illegal hunting for an improved livelihood that allows him to continue doing what he loves most – spending time in the forests, with the wilderness, and now protecting the wild Amur tigers.
