65% of positive rabies samples are from owned dog (30/6/17-2/7/18)
Joey (not her real name) adopted a puppy from street 4 years ago. A lovely white pup, she named him ‘Xiao Bai’. Xiao Bai was given plenty of love during his puppy stage, core vaccinations were provided.
It is a weekly ritual of Joey giving Xiao Bai a good body scrub on every Saturday’s morning. Everything was normal, Joey even didn’t suspect anything peculiar on Xiao Bai. As Joey was pouring water onto Xiao Bai’s back, he bit on Joey’s left hand.
Irene, Joey’s daughter, witnessed the incident, pulled Xiao Bai away, and quickly drove Joey to Sarawak General Hospital to receive treatment.
After returning from SGH, Joey and Irene discovered that Xiao Bai behave different than his usual self; biting every single thing that was next to him, grasping in the air, dreamy eyes and his movement is akin to a drunkard.
Who would have thought that a well-behave dog usual weekly bathing episode would turn into a nightmare for mother and daughter. Irene told us that Xiao Bai didn’t receive its vaccination against rabies.
Both mother and daughter stayed inside their house, monitored Xiao Bai’s movement. At 4 in the morning, Xiao Bai was reported dead. Joey & Irene just lost their pet to deadly virus called rabies.
Xiao Bai was sent to Department of Veterinary Services, Sarawak for laboratory test the following day. Joey is currently receiving her medical treatment at SGH.
We gathered that 65% of samples sent for lab test, tested positive for rabies came from home dog (pet). Please don’t live in fear like Joey or Irene (even if it is just one night).
Bring your dogs for free vaccination against rabies that is given by DVS this Saturday, 9am to 2pm at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS. If you’re a community feeder, bring your strays over for vaccination too!
Let everyone knows about the mass vaccination, and start to be responsible pet owner! It is a community effort to eradicate rabies.
Together, let us fight against rabies.
