Dear Supporters
2016 was a big year for the SPCA. In January, we vacated our home at Mount Vernon to usher in a new era of the SPCA in Sungei Tengah. In less than a week, 150 animals were shipped to the countryside in the far west. Our new purpose built animal welfare centre has more space and facilities for our animals, and people too. It has been wonderful seeing our dogs enjoy the large runs, playing and running around with staff and volunteers.
Our Inspectorate has been very busy this year, seeing between 60 80 welfare and cruelty cases every month.
There have been a number of heartbreaking cases this year involving animals thrown from height, beaten, scalded, and mentally abused. This reminds us why we do the work we do. The team at the SPCA worked tirelessly to assist the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice, while also focusing strongly on our key mission to prevent cruelty in the first place.
We have had a good number of successes working with pet owners to improve the lives of animals under their care by, for example, freeing dogs and cats from cages and tethers, providing rabbits with larger living spaces, and ensuring all pets have a clean, safe, and comfortable home to live in.
SPCAs rescue team has had a busy year attending to almost 2,000 calls ranging from animals hit by vehicles, falling from height, stuck on trees or ledges, to animals drowning in drains.
Staff and volunteers were elated when 2016 saw two of our longest staying residents, Ida and Dino, find amazing homes. Ida left us after spending eight years at the SPCA, and Dino five years. Joining them in finding lovely homes were 800 other animals.
We also listened to you. After receiving feedback on our services, we made changes to our lost and found service for pets and reinstated our community animal sterilisation voucher programme. Please keep the feedback coming as we are always looking to improve how we operate.
We were also busy this year advocating for all creatures great and small, speaking up on various issues such as the illegal wildlife trade, fur farming, the death of sheep on board a flight en route to Singapore, the use of electric shock collars, wild boar management, animal handling at Changi Airport, and the use of animals in research, to name a few.
There is still much to be done, and with your continued support, my team and I will work hard to find new and meaningful ways to improve animal welfare in Singapore in 2017 and beyond.
As everyone starts getting ready to party for the new year, on behalf of all at the SPCA, a very Happy New Year to our kind supporters! Best wishes for 2017 to you and your family, furry and otherwise
