SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT: BALL PYTHON AND SLOW LORIS SEIZED

Update: Investigations have been completed and the seller has been prosecuted by the authorities, receiving a compound fine.

In March 2016, The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) was informed by an informant of sale of live animals. The advertisement was placed on an online platform advertising a tame slow loris for sale.

Our investigators investigated into the matter and the authorities seized a ball python and a slow loris following a sting operation. Both animals have been sent to the Wildlife Reserves Singapore.

From various investigations, it is a known and unfortunate facts that animals like slow lorises (Nycticebus species) are taken from the wild. Slow lorises have their teeth cut or pulled out for the pet trade. No matter how many adorable they look, they belong in the wild. They do not make suitable pets and are very difficult to care for, and often die from shock, infection, blood loss, improper handling, environmental stress or inadequate nutrition. The slow loris is endangered and falls under CITES Appendix I, rendering protection against any trade.

We would like to urge the members of public to help end the illegal wildlife trade by reporting such cases or advertisements to us. Please do write to us at acrescrime@gmail.com. The following information would be useful for us to investigate:

1. Screenshots of advertisement

2. URL of the advertisement

3. Contact/username of the seller

4. Price and animal advertised for sale
