ANIMAL CARE UPDATE: PINEAPPLE SAYS HI!
Meet Pineapple, one of our young green iguanas. Rescued as a juvenile, Pineapple has since grown bigger.
Here, Pineapple is on the floor, catching some morning sunlight. Green iguanas are one of the commonly and heavily exploited species for the illegal pet trade in reptiles. These animals have complex needs. Even for rescued individuals, it takes a lot of effort and space to try and provide for their needs in captivity – proving that these wild animals do not make suitable pets. Sadly, they are often abandoned when their owners are not able to take care of them anymore.
Pineapple was probably one such victim. Green iguanas come from a tropical climate and Singapore’s green spaces does support a small thriving population. Unfortunately, many abandoned iguanas do die a horrible death from traffic accidents and those who do survive in Singapore could pose a threat to our ecosystem in the long run.
Buying and/or keeping wild animals supports the illegal trade which is responsible for the suffering of millions of animals directly and indirectly.
Please say no to wildlife trade!
