SPCA is advising the public not to buy animals on impulse after watching the movie ‘The Secret Life of Pets’. The animation comedy that is playing nationwide, features computer-generated talking pets that lead secret lives after their owners leave for work.
As part of our education efforts, we have collaborated with Cathay Cineplexes to run an announcement before the screening of the movie, that advises people not to rush out and buy a pet.
In June this year, the Straits Times reported on the upsurge in local retail sales of Blue Tangs after the release of Pixars ‘Finding Dory’, while in 2003, ‘Finding Nemo’ sparked an increase in the demand for clownfishes. Pet store retailers also witnessed an increase in the sale of guinea pigs, following the release of the film ‘G-Force’ in 2009.
Similarly, with the screening of ‘The Secret Life of Pets’, SPCA is concerned that there may be a surge in popularity following the antics of select animal characters, which could lead to impulse purchases.
A pet is a life-time commitment.
Thank you, Cathay Cineplexes, for helping us spread the message!
