SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT MAN CAUGHT WITH 22 INDIAN STAR TORTOISES
A 49-year-old man was recently caught at Woodlands checkpoint attempting to smuggle 22 Indian star tortoises into Singapore. The animals were found in a bag in his car boot on the 27th of June 2016.
Star tortoises are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), to which Singapore is a signatory.
They are also protected under Singapore Law. Under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act, the import and export/re-export of star tortoises require CITES permits. Offenders in violation of this Act can be fined up to S$50,000 (not to exceed an aggregate of S$500,000) per animal, and/or face a jail term of up to two years.
The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) reminds members of the public that it is illegal to keep most wild animals as pets in Singapore, and purchasing prohibited wild animals as pets fuels the cruel and destructive illegal wildlife trade.
If you have any information concerning illegal wildlife trade in Singapore, do contact the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) or the police, or you can also contact the ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit at acrescrime@gmail.com.
Together, we can help fight wildlife crime and end animal cruelty.
