MONKEY BUSINESS!

Macaques are not pets; they are wild animals, and they need lots of space to jump, swing and run and perform their whole range of natural behaviours.

Like humans, macaques are social animals. They need companions, and keeping them solitary is cruel.

Macaques do not just eat bananas, which is a common notion among children and adults alike! In fact, some macaques do not enjoy eating bananas! In the wild, macaques are general feeders, feeding on a whole range of items including wild figs, flowers, buds, leafs, insects, eggs, tiny frogs and lizards.

Feeding macaques human food such as bread, nuts and sweet fruits can be detrimental to their health. In addition, feeding any wild animal may affect the animal’s behaviour and their movement patterns. This potentially leads to further complications, such as a wider human-animal interaction whereby residents may perceive the interactions to be negative, and habitat displacement.

To maintain balance in Singapore’s natural ecosystems, we should leave wild animals and their environment alone as much as possible. Singapore has laws in place to encourage this, for example it is illegal to feed wild animals and to take most of them from the wild to keep as pets.

Please report to us if you know of anyone feeding Singapore’s wild long-tailed macaques, or if you know of anyone keeping a macaque as a pet. You can make a report to the ACRES Wildlife Crime Hotline at +65 9783 7782 24 hours a day.
