SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT REPORTS ON ILLEGAL FEEDING OF MONKEYS

The ACRES Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has been receiving feedback about members of the public illegally feeding native macaques (monkeys) at nature parks and reserves.

We would like to stress that the feeding of wild macaques in Singapores nature reserves is illegal. Please let your friends and family know this, in case they are unaware!

Here are some reasons why you should never feed wild macaques:

1. When macaques get used to being fed by humans, it may hinder their ability to find for food for themselves within their natural habitat.

2. It causes the macaques to associate plastic bags/containers with food, thereby increasing their tendency to snatch these items from members of the public. This creates human macaque conflict.

3. Most importantly, feeding by humans may draw macaques out of their natural forest habitats and into areas of human habitation, and make them more likely to enter residential buildings to look for food. This creates human macaque conflict.

If you spot anyone feeding wild macaques in Singapore, you can call the NParks (National Parks Board) 24-hour hotline at 1800-471-7300 to report it, or you can call the AVA hotline at 1800 476 1600.

If you have experienced macaques entering your premises, click the following links to learn how to keep them away and at the same time practice harmonious living: https://www.nparks.gov.sg/gardens-parks-and-nature/dos-and-donts/animal-advisories/macaques

We hope that through education and awareness, people can learn to live in greater harmony with our native macaques.
