Gift By Donation: The Fire Monkey Blankie
Tweet |
It’s the Year of the Fire Monkey and as the lunar year began, we received a request to make a monkey blanket. We made the baby monkey applique and that was auctioned off. Then, there was a request for a king-size monkey print blanket. Agnes Cheong scoured the textile shops and found the blue monkey print. We did that and it was auctioned off too.
Then, there was a third request for still another king-size monkey print blanket so Agnes scoured the textile shops again. The blue one was already out of stock but she managed to find a pink version of the same monkey and she bought 2 metres so that a king-size can be made. It took me 2 weeks to complete this blanket since it was so big!
It’s the Fire Monkey, hence red and orange rule. Also, the monkey print fabric is already pink. There was no other monkey prints available.
We are very grateful to our regular anonymous supporter for offering to buy (by donation) this blanket for RM1000! The donation is made in memory of Boy Boy, who crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge recently. In fact, the blue monkey print blanket was also bought in memory of Boy Boy and gifted to Boy Boy’s nurse as a thank you present.
Here is our Fire Monkey Blankie below. Our generous donor says that the red theme will always remind her for Boy Boy’s courage and bravery. We’re glad our efforts are appreciated and have worked out favourably – thank you very much! And your kind donation will help many animals who come our way.
This king size blanket measures approx 7 ft by 9 ft.
My mum is currently working on the backing. The backing cloth is contributed by Agnes Cheong.
I bought several pieces of cloth to match the pink monkey print.
As with all things of beauty (or not!), it is in the eye of the beholder. We are not able to please everyone as people have different tastes and preferences, but we are definitely open to constructive suggestions for new ideas.
Our blanket project is carried out in the spirit of goodwill and minimal wastage of the earth’s resources. This why we maximise the use of cloth (even the tiniest bits are used) and you’d notice that most of the time, rectangles are used to form the design. If the prints are big, then larger pieces are used to do justice to the pictures. If we receive cloth donation, we will definitely make full use of the donated cloth to make the best possible blanket(s) we can, in the best ways we know how (this also means making blankets that we think would please the majority of the donors). But there is still a balance here, between making what sells and embracing minimal wastage. Being eco-friendly still rules.
This would be the 138th blanket we have sold by donation. We thank you very, very much for your great support and encouragement. So many animals have been helped as a result of the donations received through our auctions and direct sales by donation. In order to keep going, perhaps we need new ideas for the blankets?
If you have ideas to share, please do write to me or leave a comment.
Thank you, everyone!
