ERNIE, THE VERY PATIENT GIANT ASIAN POND TURTLE
Unlike the other giant Asian pond turtles in our care, Ernie tends to be alert during the usual feeding time, and on this occasion decided to patiently wait for food to be served.
Since her arrival at our rescue centre, poor Ernie has gone through some troubling times. She was bullied by other turtles in her initial enclosure, which unfortunately saw her on the receiving end of a severe bite. We moved her to a different enclosure with a less aggressive turtle, and Ernie decided to become the bully and bite her new enclosure mate. Now, Ernie has her own small enclosure where she likes to soak in the water tub…for the whole day!
Giant Asian pond turtles are heavily exploited by humans. They are captured and sold as pets, and also for their meat. Some are also sold for the practice of mercy release, by which where they are irresponsibly released into habitats that they may not be adapted to and in countries to which they are not native. We have come across all too many cases where such released turtles have been killed on the roads.
Wild animals belong in the wild. Lets end the illegal wildlife trade.
