ACRES Pilot Project In Bukit Timah - Monkey Guard

THE PILOT PROJECT IN BUKIT TIMAH MONKEY GUARDS

As 2015 comes to end, it is a good time to review this pilot project which has lasted for one year. The pilot project was initiated following a rise in the human-macaque tension near the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. After several experimental studies and behavioural observations of the macaques, ACRES conducted a one year project the Monkey Guards project, as an alternative towards a modern way towards co-existing with the macaques.

As a result, 5 residential areas have declared themselves to be macaque friendly. From practicing preventive measures, education on macaques facial expressions and periodic feedback sessions, the human-macaque tension has decreased substantially.

As the macaques natural home overlaps the residential areas, sightings of the macaques will always be present. However, residents playing their part to be extra cautious during the macaques active hours and our herding process, the macaques have since stopped entering the housing units. The success of this project would not have been possible without the help of residential management and security guards.

ACRES would like to thank everyone who have been part of this project. With that, lets work towards a harmonious human-macaque living in 2016!
