AN INTERVIEW WITH JOANNA, OUR LONG TERM VOLUNTEER AND THE “SPONSORED PARENT” OF OUR FURRY KIDS (DOGS) AT ACRES!

1. How did you get involved with ACRES?

- I got involved with ACRES as early as a decade ago when the project against the captivity of pink dolphins at Sentosa was launched. Petition booths were set up and I recall bringing one of those petition sheets into office and collecting signatures from my colleagues. I found the chance to volunteer as a wildlife guardian, rescue officer and also help out at the AFA conference since early last year when I took a short break from work. My volunteering is ad-hoc now due to my schedule, so I try to contribute in other areas such as fundraising or at events.

2. What experience have you gained so far?

- It has been a rewarding experience and I finally got to learn animal rescue – though I have never come across a python case just yet (somehow I don’t get them on my shifts!) Equally meaningful is the opportunity to share with callers and residents on the ways to co-exist with wildlife, because education fosters awareness and changes mindsets.

3. What message or advice would give to your peers who share the same passion as you to make a difference for animals?

- Everyone can be an agent of change. If you have passion for animals, you’ll always find your own ways to serve that passion in your daily life – be it sharing about animal welfare issues with the people around you, embarking on a cruelty free lifestyle or simply posting about that delicious meat-free meal you’ve just had! No effort is too small, because you’ll never know how people’s perceptions are slowly changing along the way. The animal welfare movement is gaining momentum with the aid of social media, so never give up believing that things can get much better for animals in our generation!
