Sanctuary For Rescued Wild Animals

ACRES OUTDOOR SANCTUARY AREA TURNS TWO YEARS OLD!
Back in 2013, an army of dedicated volunteers helped the ACRES team transform an undeveloped piece of land into a naturalistic sanctuary for rescued tortoises and turtles in our care.
On the 14th of November 2013, this Main Sanctuary Area was officially opened, and the animals were released into their new homes. For many of the rescued tortoises, who were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, it could well have been the first time they felt grass beneath their feet or felt what it was like to bask in the sunlight.
As well as providing spacious, naturalistic homes for the animals, the Sanctuary also enhances our volunteer programmes. Volunteers can now get more involved with hands-on animal care and learn more about the rescued animals. We are also better able to raise awareness about the illegal wildlife trade and educate the public about how so many animals are suffering because of it.
Two years on, the Sanctuary is still going strong, with continuous revamping and maintenance efforts. From initially housing 46 animals, the Sanctuary is now home to around 100 animals. This would not have been possible without the help of our supporters and volunteers, whose contributions and hard work changed the way our rescued animals live their lives.
However, we are not done yet. As we continue to strive for repatriation back to their country of origin for as many of the animals as possible, we want to embark on a new project to change the lives of more of the rescued turtles and the green iguanas in our care. Well share more about this project in next weeks post, so do watch out for it!

46 wild animals found a new home on Thursday at animal welfare group ACRES’ new sanctuary area. Built by hundreds of volunteers over 6 months, the sanctuary gives these wildlife a resting place while ACRES works on repatriating them to their native habitats.
