SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT BIRD SMUGGLER CHARGED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY
Mr. Leong was jailed for illegally smuggling live animals into Singapore and for animal cruelty.
He was caught following a routine check by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in April 2014. A total of 9 birds were uncovered in his luggage. The birds were individually stuffed into PVC tubes wrapped with aluminium foil.
Two different species of birds were found. One of these species the melodious laughing thrush- is a protected species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
Unfortunately, all 9 birds died due to lack of food and water during the week that they were contained in the luggage. The birds would have probably suffered greatly, and have become tragic victims of the cruel illegal wildlife
