Penang is targeting to vaccinate some 10,000 stray dogs in a bid to prevent the recurrence of rabies.
The disease in the state is also now declared as being under control with no new reported cases.
State Veterinary Services Department deputy chief director Dr Kamaruddin Isa said that some 50,000 doses have been received by the Federal Veterinary Services Department in Putrajaya and will be distributed to states such as Perlis, Kedah and Penang with every 100 vaccines being distributed to vets.
Dr Kamaruddin also said that meetings with several non-governmental organisations have reached a few agreements; namely to continue with the vaccination.
“As can be seen, there has been an increase in vaccinations and this is a good thing.
“The second is that, private veterinary doctors in Penang have agreed to play a proactive role to carry out vaccinations on domestic dogs.
“We have 17 veterinary doctors whom we have met and held discussions with recently and they have agreed to use the vaccines we supply to them,” he told a press conference at the State Veterinary Services Department in Bukit Minyak here today.
He said it is expected that the 17 veterinary doctors could carry out at least 3,000 vaccinations on dogs in their clinics in the state.
We look forward to more wisdom and compassion from the humans in power.
Thank you for finally agreeing to vaccinate the dogs.
For those who have fallen, we pray you are all in a better and happier place now.
We also hope that more humans will join in collectively to speak up for the animals.
They need us, they cannot speak for themselves.
