DOLPHIN TRIVIA: MORE ABOUT DOLPHIN FEEDING STRATEGIES
Last week we discussed the use of mud nets by dolphins to catch their prey.
Did you know that another clever feeding strategy used by dolphins is the use of sea sponges as tools? Dolphins have been observed putting sponges on their rostra, or beaks, to protect against abrasion while they comb through the seafloor for prey. The first ever dolphin who was observed with such behaviour was nicknamed Sponging Eve! Another brilliant feeding strategy is known as stranding behaviour, whereby dolphins group together and charge towards the shore. This creates waves that force fish onto the land, and the dolphins will beach themselves briefly on the shore to feed.

Sadly, in captivity, dolphins are usually prevented from performing these, and many other natural behaviours.
