SATURDAY CRIME NIGHT CRIMES AGAINST ELEPHANTS

August the 13th was World Elephant Day. Many of us know that Asian elephants are endangered, due to habitat loss and the ivory trade. But did you know that ivory continues to be smuggled through Singapore, and the authorities are playing an important role intercepting these illegal shipments?

Here are details of recent ivory seizures in Singapore:

1. In May 2015, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), Singapore Customs, and Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) intercepted 3.7 tonnes of raw ivory tusks, 4 pieces of rhinoceros horns, and 22 pieces of canine teeth believed to be from African big cats. The shipment from Kenya was transiting through Singapore to Vietnam. The seizure was estimated to be worth S$8 million.

2. In April 2014, the AVA and Singapore Customs intercepted about 1 tonne of raw ivory tusks transiting through Singapore from Africa, estimated to be worth S$2 million

3. In January 2013, the AVA and Singapore Customs intercepted 1.8 tonnes of raw ivory tusks transiting through Singapore from Africa, estimated to be worth S$2.5 million.

4. In June 2002, AVA seized 6 tonnes of raw ivory husks and cut ivory pieces transiting through Singapore from Africa, estimated to be worth S$1.5 million.

Under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act, those caught smuggling ivory can been fined up to S$50,000 per item (not exceeding an aggregate of S$500,000), and/or face imprisonment of up to two years.

Ivory trafficking is REAL! Help to stop the killing of these beautiful giants by discouraging others from buying/selling products made from ivory. Please report to us via email: acrescrime@gmail.com if you have any information on ivory trafficking.
