FIRST MACAQUE INTEGRATION PRIOR TO RELEASE

Bike and Rossa were rescued on different days in February, during the Chinese New Year period. This was the first time that ACRES has rescued two macaques within such a short space of time. Unlike the previous times when we have rehabilitated single macaques prior to release, their story has an interesting twist. From perfect strangers, Bike and Rossa appear to have become good friends during their rehabilitation process!

Whilst we do know Bikes family troop, Rossas origin remains unknown. We decided to introduce Bike and Rossa to each other, so that they can be released back into the wild together. As macaques are highly social animals, the integration has been successful in minimising their stress levels during the rehabilitation period. Both macaques have been observed grooming each other and seeking companionship. In fact, we have started to see their individual characters emerge ever since the integration.

We thank Nparks for their support and partnership for the selection of a suitable site for release. Both macaques will be microchipped prior to release, so that there is proper monitoring post-release. Both macaques will also be placed in a pre-release holding area for a few days, so that we can observe how other macaque troops react to them.

We also thank Animal Recovery Veterinary Referral Centre (ARVC) for all their help in treating Bike and Rossa, despite their hectic schedule.
