In 2011, Bangkok, capital city of Thailand, was devastated by some of the worst flooding in its history. Hundreds of people lost their lives and millions were left homeless or displaced.
Violet was one of over 300 dogs rescued from a flooded shelter at Phuttamonthon (The National Buddhist headquarters and also a huge park). The shelter dogs had found refuge on a small bridge in the park that was only accessible by boat.
A Thai lady who looked after the dogs would travel 30 minutes by boat every day to ensure they got food. When Soi Dog Foundation visited, it was clear there was a disaster waiting to happen as many of the dogs were sick and the risk of disease was very high.
Violet was suffering from an extreme case of mange, which concerned locals had tried to treat with gentian violet, a traditional Thai remedy.
In a joint operation involving the Royal Thai Army and local volunteers, the dogs were removed by small boats to the main road over the course of 2 days. From there they were transported by converted trucks to the Wildlife Friends of Thailand centre over 100 miles away, where Soi Dog supporters had financed a huge temporary shelter, in cooperation with WFFT.
However, some of the dogs, like Violet, were very sick and were taken to a vet clinic in Bangkok. All these dogs needed intensive care and on recovery were transferred to our shelter in Phuket, from where they were eventually adopted, along with the dogs that feature on our Facebook cover photo, taken during the rescue mission.
Pictured below is Violet when she was rescued, and Violet in her forever home this Christmas. Her amazing story, and those of all the other rescued dogs, was only made possible because of Soi Dog supporters. Simply put, we can’t do it without you.

Every day, Soi Dog Foundation picks up sick and injured stray dogs and cats in desperate need of medical attention. We urgently need your support to save them.
