This morning at 8am, the Macaque Team successfully herded a troop from residential houses back to the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in 20minutes. The team has been following the Hindhede Troop hence they knew them individually. The team also knows the distribution range of the troop.
Here’s what Sabrina, a member from the team has to say:
“We identify the dominant and braver individuals. When they start to move away, the rest of the members of the troop will follow too. Doing basic word command and clapping our hands or holding a stick while walking towards them will gradually push them away. Of course these comes with proper techniques and knowing how to read their facial expressions and body language. We are thankful to the security guards and residences who showed their support and learnt something new today. This is definitely a more effective and humane way on how we can live harmoniously with the macaques. It is always important to identify and acknowledge the root of every problem.”
