Saving The Dogs And Cats Of Suan Kaew Temple: Please Help Us

We recently introduced you to The Worst Shelter in the World, also known as Dog Condo, based at Bangkoks Suan Kaew temple. When John Dalley, founder of the Soi Dog Foundation first visited, he found it was nothing short of hell on earth for the dogs and cats being housed there. To learn more, please watch the video at the following link: http://bit.ly/ScX3Nl

Dog Condo came into existence with the best of intentions. Suan Kaew is a famous Bangkok temple, with its own charitable foundation and the abbot, Phra Payom Kallayano, is well respected for his good works. When a purge on Bangkoks street dogs began prior to the 2003 APEC conference, Phra Payom ordered the construction of a shelter to save them. Unfortunately, many pet owners went on to abuse the generosity of the shelter by dumping their unwanted pets there. Numbers rapidly spiralled out of control.

Following Soi Dogs visit to the shelter, we appealed for your help and once again, you listened. We wanted to update you on what your donations have accomplished so far and let you know our plans for continued improvements.

An investigation into the waste and effluent problem is ongoing and plans for an alternative system are being drawn up, along with designs for improved accommodation on the ground floor level. Bridges have been constructed at ground level to enable the dogs to cross the cess pits without having to swim through waste matter. Additional water tanks have been purchased, with the installation of a new water pump and pipe work almost complete. Access to fresh water is essential in order to provide the animals with a clean living environment.

New fencing is being installed on the upper level so dogs and puppies can no longer fall to their death. The shelter itself has been completely rewired and the roof is being replaced. In the coming weeks, we will hold a mobile clinic to spay and neuter all the unsterilised dogs and cats.

A number of large cat houses are being constructed so that cats no longer need to live in cages suspended from the ceiling to protect them from potentially fatal dog attacks. Each cat house costs 150,000 Thai baht (just under US$5,000) and we need more there are still over 120 cats living in small cages in various parts of the compound.

We are employing additional staff to assist us and are making progress in turning the worst shelter in the world into a safer and more comfortable environment. To continue this work, we need your support. Much remains to be done. Please help us get there by making a donation at: http://bit.ly/1o5IwNj

Thank you.
