Kato Comes In With An Injured Paw But Vets Find Another Problem
Tweet |
Kato was recently picked up from a local school by Khun Jaroon when he noticed that Kato had an injured paw. This wound is very seriously infected and is secreting blood and pus.
Once Kato arrived at the shelter, vets realised that his urine was red and performed a further examination. It was found that Kato has a nasty tumour at the base of his penis, most likely caused by a condition called canine transmissible venereal tumour (TVT), a type of cancer easily spread between dogs. This condition is more commonly seen in tropical climates with a high street population, just like Phuket. Dogs suffering this condition may also have urinary tract problems, nosebleeds and other nasal discharge, facial swelling and swollen lymph nodes. Left untreated, this cancer may spread to the skin, brain, liver, spleen, testicles and muscles and the prognosis would not be positive.
Blood tests have also revealed that Kato has anaemia and problems with his liver enzymes. He is currently being treated for these issues along with his terribly infected paw. Once these problems are under control the vets will commence treatment for his tumour.
