AWRC Sanctuary Area Opening, 14th November 2013

What a brilliant day for the animals at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC), with the opening of our new outdoor Sanctuary Area!
Our heartfelt thanks to Minister of State Mr. Desmond Lee for gracing the opening ceremony this morning.
During the ceremony, Mr. Lee, together with ACRES volunteers, released animals into their new enclosures. For many of the animals, this was the first time they had walked on grass or climbed trees since they were poached from the wild.
Big Momma, a star tortoise native to India, was the first animal to be released. Big Momma would have been smuggled into Singapore for the illegal pet trade. She was probably packed into a suitcase and smuggled in horrendous conditions on board a flight from Chennai to Singapore. Someone illegally bought her and kept her as a pet and then literally threw her away when they no longer wanted her. Following a tip off to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline, Big Momma was rescued by ACRES from a rubbish area at an HDB block in Sengkang. She was suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies and required critical veterinary care. She has recovered well, and will now enjoy basking under natural sunlight, and spending the mornings munching on her favourite buttercup flowers in her new enclosure.
