The Wisdom Of The River

I remember an old poem my teacher penned in my book in primary school. It goes like this:
Do your best and leave the rest;
‘Twill all come right; Some day or night.
I later found out that it is from Anne Sewell’s classic, Black Beauty. Of all the poems I’ve come across, this is one that I’ve remembered and held on to all my life as my guiding principle.
It is so full of wisdom about what we can do with everything that we have to do: Do your best and this is so important. It has to be our best. The very best. Then, leave the rest. This is knowing when we have done enough and that we have to leave it because there is nothing more we can do but to wait and see.
And Twill all come right.It will, and it always will, only sometimes it’s not what we expect or what we wish to see, and if only we would step back and look at the bigger picture, we will see that there is always a silver lining behind every cloud. Something right will come out of everything, if only we look hard enough.
So, in our animal caregiving work, let’s do our best and then, leave the rest.
Like a river, things will find its own way of working out…some day or night.
Some things just cannot be rushed.
