The way you move and behave makes all the difference in putting a fearful animal at ease.

- Let the animal decide whether or not to approach. Don�t restrain the animal and force it to accept contact.

- When facing the animal, always turn to the side. Facing them directly comes off as confrontational.

- It is perfectly fine to look at the animal, but make sure not to stare directly in its eyes. A direct stare is a threat in the animal kingdom (even we don�t like to be stared at!).

- Soften your expression and always remember not to hover over the animal; get down to their level, and keep a respectable distance. Let the animal cover the rest of the distance at its own time.

- Always allow the animal to sniff your fist before beginning to pet it gently.

- Avoid touching them immediately on the head � it can be quite intimidating to have a stranger suddenly pat your head!

- It�s always good to move gradually and not suddenly. Quick and sudden movements spook animals out.

Always watch your expression and body language! While humans interpret a smile as friendly, a show of teeth is a threat in the animal kingdom. Smile at animals with closed mouths
