A Novel Idea In Cat Fostering (shared By Koo)

I think many cat fosterers will find these ideas beneficial (provided their cats do not have the habit of shredding and tearing up paper and cardboard!)

Thanks for sharing, Koo.

Dear Dr Chan,

I was reading about Ginger not using the litter box and I believe it’s
because he crate-trained himself and treat the litter box as his bed
so of course, he would not soil it.

From my experience with cats and the most recent is with Caty, I would
put in a box big enough to fit a cat but small enough not to take too
much space in a cage (which must be big size). Thus, Caty would
psychologically consider the box as her ‘home’ and anywhere else
inside the cage as ‘outside’ which will include the litter box. Caty
would defecate on the newspaper flooring in the beginning but after I
scooped the poo and put it into the litter box, she figured out that
the litter box was the toilet and finally used it for her pee and poo.
So far, it has worked with all the kittens and cats that I’ve fostered
who were all former community cats who never used a litter box before.

Attached is a picture (caty.jpg) of Caty in the cage although later, I
had to dismantle the other panels inside because she wasn’t interested
in using them to climb up unlike some kittens who were more
adventureous.

I also include a picture (box.jpg) of how I used the photostat A4-size
box covers to make a temporary shelter which I’ve used for the LDP
pups which were also kept in a cage. The covers last longer than a box
because they were more sturdy and easier to dismantle/dispose. If you
would like to have some, I can pass you some because my office has
been throwing them out until I started to collect them for anybody who
wants them.

Thanks and best regards,

Koo
