Humans And Animals Possess The Same Consciousness (The Cambridge Declaration Of Consciousness)

On 7th July 2012, a group of neuroscientists signed the Cambridge Declaration of Consciousness:

We declare the following: The absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states. Convergent evidence indicates that non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors. Consequently, the weight of evidence indicates that humans are not unique in possessing the neurological substrates that generate consciousness. Nonhuman animals, including all mammals and birds, and many other creatures, including octopuses, also possess these neurological substrates.

Ask any pet-owner or someone who works closely with animals and they will be able to tell you that animals have the capacity to feel, to love, to care, to express gratitude and many other emotions in their own ways. It’s only that we humans may not understand them (very often, they understand us – so who is actually “smarter”?).

But some people will doubt this fact and only believe it when there is some scientifically-researched backing to support it. Well, here’s the Cambridge Declaration of Consciousness for them.

I hope, once and for all, this will provide the answer to the age-old question of whether animals have a “soul” (consciousness, etc.) or are capable of feeling as we do. Once this question is answered, maybe, just maybe, people would learn to regard animals as equals and treat them with more respect.
