Buri Ram Dogs Found...

Buri Ram Dogs Found

In early July Soi Dog personnel visited the Khemmerat and Buri Ram (Buriram) Livestock facilities NE of Bangkok where dogs rescued from dog meat trade smugglers were housed. At Khemmerat the dogs were neither segregated, nor sterilized and due to the lack of segregation breeding was occurring with litters having already been born. Unfortunately due to the lack of segregation dogs which had been vaccinated were mixed with unvaccinated dogs which in effect requires vaccinating all dogs yet again. Fortunately it appears that steps will be taken to segregate newly arrived unvaccinated dogs from vaccinated ones.

In consultation with Soi Dog the department of Livestock made the decision to sterilize the dogs at Khemmarat as soon as possible as a further potential disaster was already in progress. Puppies born in an environment like this have a very, very low chance of surviving particularly when in close proximity to dogs caring communicable diseases such as distemper. To continue to leave the dogs unsterilized would have resulted in literally hundreds of unnecessary deaths of new born puppies. Soi Dog agreed to cover the costs and to provide the personnel to conduct the sterilizations, however first requested that additional concrete runs be constructed plus improvements to the hospital and isolation units for which Soi Dog would also cover the costs.

At a meeting with the manager at the Buriram facility, he told us the other dogs (excepting the relatively small number of dogs pulled out for adoption), had either died or ran away due to the condition of the fencing. It has now come to light that many if not most of the dogs at Buri Ram had in fact been transferred to yet another facility in Kanchanaburi.

The dogs were found there in appalling condition covered in ticks, and hence having blood parasites. Many also have maggot infested wounds.

Soi Dog is supporting Fight For Dogs (a Thai group of volunteers) to help these dogs. A veterinarian is accompanying Fight For Dogs and Soi Dog has offered to pay him to stay there for a month and treat these dogs. Soi Dog is also paying the volunteers costs including hire of vehicles, and costs of all the medications required.
