How Did The Turtle Discovery Trips Go?
Two Turtle Discovery Trips had been successfully carried out in the past two weekends, and I am glad to report that the participants had had an enjoyable time here in Cherating/Kemaman. They visited the Turtle Sanctuary in Cherating, which is managed by the Department of Fisheries, Pahang and learned a great deal about the sea turtles and critically endangered terrapins in Malaysia.
They were brought to one of the project sites of the River Terrapin Conservation Project carried out by TCS along the Kemaman River. They saw and held river terrapin hatchlings for the first time, and were briefed about the status of the terrapins as well as the threats that they are facing.
In the evening, we went to Pantai Teluk Mak Nik, also known as Monica Bay, the sea turtle nesting beach where they had the opportunity to watch an adult female green turtle lays her eggs. Our friends also had the opportunity to release some green turtle hatchlings into the South China Sea!
I have had an enjoyable time during both the Turtle Discovery Trips, and I am really looking forward to the next two trips, which will take place on the 19th and 26th May 2012. And, a little bonus to those who will be joining us on the 19th May–We will also be releasing hundreds of river terrapin hatchlings into the Kemaman River, in conjunction with World Turtle Day that is celebrated worldwide annually on the 23rd May
