Mukdahan – Police today confiscated 880 dogs destined across the
Mekong by the dog meat ring. Mukdahan’s Animal Quarantine does not
have sufficient facilities to accommodate the dogs so they are being
sent to a station in Buri Ram.

At 8:00 pm (21 Apr) police officers raided warehouses along the Mekong
river and found 42 steel cages with 15-20 dogs in each totalling 630
dogs. Some were being slided down to the river bank causing some dogs
to die. Ones that barked or made noise were beaten to death by the
workers. Some dogs were found wearing collars showing they had been
vaccinated. Some were only 2-3 months old. The condition was cramp and
dogs were left hungry. The dog meat trade is currently flourishing
along Mukdahan border as low tide makes it easy for transport.

At another location, 250 dogs dogs were found in 11 steel cages which
were left in a sugar cane plantation in Pone Sai district of Mukdahan.
Police suspect the dog meat ring found out about the raid on the river
bank and were making the get-away. They came across a dead end so
kicked off the cages from the truck causing some dogs to perish.

Mukdahan’s Chif Vet revealed they did not have sufficient facilities
to house all dogs due to lack of caged areas, therefore dogs are being
moved to nearby Buri Ram where the centre is better-equipped.
