Spaying Subsidy For A Female Cat (Hew Sook Yeans)
Ever since implementing our subsidy scheme so that we can reach out to rescuers all over the country (we did away with panel vets), our former panel vets have been given our subsidy forms so that they can recommend needy rescuers to apply for our subsidy.
One of our former panel vets have been recommending many rescuers to our fund, which is a good thing, especially when it is through recommendation of the vet. At least we know the vet thinks the rescuer needs the subsidy, ie. a first round of “vetting” has been done by the vet!
One such rescuer is Hew Sook Yean who works as a butcher in Subang Jaya.
Apparently, the area where she lives has an overpopulation of stray cats, so she is keen to get them neutered.
She brought in a female cat a few days ago, and the cat has been spayed.
We have subsidised RM100 for it.
On another matter, I am still getting receipts and forms thrown into my postbox every now and then with no prior application at all. If these people have filled up their handphone numbers, I would call them to explain our procedure. But sometimes, they do not even pick up their phones when called. Most of them do not have email addresses too. If they are not contactable, there is nothing much I can do as I have to follow our procedures.
A gentle reminder, if I may: All requests for subsidy STARTS with an application. Please apply for the subsidy with a write-up and photo of the animal. As I’ve always said, please do not assume we always have ready funds to dish out. We don’t. I’m no Santa Claus and we do not have a money tree. Therefore, please apply first.
I have been receiving, sadly, from young people, emails that say: I have rescued this-and-this animal and I have got it neutered or treated or vaccinated. I WILL BE sending you the bill.
Er, excuse me?? Something is missing, my dear…did you even apply for any subsidy? Why are you sending me the bill?
Rewind, please…
Try this: “I would like to apply for a subsidy, please.”
Sounds better, doesn’t it?
It’s not surprising, you know, if you’d allow me to digress a bit. I see this in my students who come from 11 years of schooling and they are usually 18 years old by the time they come to me. This, I believe, should include 18 years of learning from their parents as well. You would think some social graces would have rubbed off on them?
There was a case where this nice boy (yes, he IS nice) who I found rummaging my papers on my desk when I came back to it.
“WHAT, may I ask, are you doing, flipping through my notes?” I asked him.
“I want to see.” he replied.
“Young man, you do NOT look at other people’s things without permission. You must ASK first.”, I said.
He appeared terribly shocked, as though wondering WHY on earth he needed to ask first.
I was shocked that he did not know.
He was shocked that he needed to ask permission before rummaging through my things.
We were clearly on two different planets here.
I do not which of us did not belong, but anyway, he also had a HUGE problem in coming to class punctually…. It took him more than 14 weeks to learn that he had to come to class punctually. In view of the infamous traffic jams in the Klang Valley, students who are 15 mins late are marked absent. 15 mins is REALLY pushing it already, but I’m not unreasonable. I understand traffic jams and I understand that our trains and buses have a schedule but they don’t stick to it, for some reason (which I do not understand).
So, after receiving repeated warnings for being late and being marked late, the young man is punctual now. However, this is still not the learning I wish for him. I wish he’d just be punctual because it is the right thing to do (and not because he will be penalised), but I shall not push my luck.
At least I think we belong to the same planet now – he and me.
I teach mathematics. But that is just a facade. What I REALLY teach, is values. Slowly…we will get there.
Those were the days, my friend,
We thought they’d never end…
