Exciting News From Soi Dog, Thailand

Let’s watch and learn!
I am writing to tell you of an exciting development in the future of Soi Dog Foundation. You may be aware that our ambition is to establish a national organisation here to tackle the problems faced by millions of stray animals.
You are no doubt aware that Soi Dog has been actively involved in Bangkok in the latter half of the year; firstly working with local people to fight the illegal dog meat trade and to introduce animal welfare laws, with this work now accelerating, and more recently coordinating the rescue and temporary care of hundreds of animals stranded by the floods.
During this time it became very clear that not only were the problems in Bangkok massive in scale, but also very encouragingly a lot of local people are trying to help the animals there, something we rarely see in Phuket.
Soi Dog has therefore taken the decision to open a branch in Bangkok and as part of this initiative the well established organisation Soi Cat and Dog Rescue (SCAD) will be incorporated into Soi Dog.
We feel it is very important that the many Thai people helping animals here have resources to help them. At present they can only help animals as they can afford, by taking them to expensive private clinics.
It is also important that the organisation is seen to be Thai led and to that end we have appointed Khun Phimpakarn Petpichetchien (Kharn) as General Manager for the Bangkok operation. Khun Kharn has volunteered on a full time basis throughout the floods assisting me both in Bangkok and in Nakom Phanom where the dog meat trade dogs are taken.
There will be many months of hard work ahead establishing an emergency and sterilization clinic amongst other things.
I should like to assure you that this will not impact on our work in Phuket where we have just employed an additional dog retrieval team and are currently sourcing and training additional vets.
We plan to double the number of sterilizations on Phuket working with the local authorities who are 100% behind our plans. Mobile clinics will be held systematically in all the local council regions with the exception of Patong owing to the council there removing sterilized dogs and not revealing what they are doing with them. Patong dogs will continue to be taken to Mai Khao for treatment and sterilization. I believe that at this rate Phuket will be totally under control in 2 years allowing us to then expand elsewhere.
Of course none of this is possible without your support, and I thank you most sincerely for enabling this work to continue.
Best wishes,
John Dalley
